I bought a Lie-Nielsen horse when they first came out and used it for many years. Because the maple block is softer than the steel the larger particles of the diamond paste tend to get pushed into the wood, leaving the very finest particles on the surface, resulting in a finer polish.

Most folks think of shaving horses as crude devices useful only for rustic craft. The shavehorse is a wonderful tool for holding chair parts while you work.
